Smith's Landing First Nation (SLFN), has approximately 360 members of Dene heritage that live on and off reserve. We are in Northern Alberta, on the border between Alberta and the Northwest Territories just outside the town of Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. As a border community we work with all levels of government; Provincial, Territorial, Federal, and the local municipality of Fort Smith. Several of our members live within the Town of Fort Smith and have a strong connection to the environment and rely on the lands in and around Wood Buffalo National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Slave River for harvesting fish and game. Our Education, Housing, Lands, Wellness, and soon be Health Department programs provide opportunities and support for all eligible Smith’s Landing First Nation members.
Smith’s Landing First Nation has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a BAND MANAGER who will report directly to SLFN Chief and Council. The incumbent works in a high-level position of trust and responsibility and must demonstrate integrity and professionalism. The Band Manager acts as the liaison between Chief and Council, the staff, and SLFN members.
The successful candidate must be able to relocate to Fort Smith, Northwest Territories.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
· The Band Manager provides support for and management of Smith’s Landing First Nation’s projects, programs, and services, and ensures the efficiency of the administration.
· The Band Manager is responsible for the successful leadership, financial integrity, and general management of the organization according to the vision, objectives, decisions, and strategic direction set out by Chief and Council.
· Manages, mentors, and ensures the successful performance of administration staff; completes employee performance appraisals, and collaboratively sets goals for all staff.
· This senior management position must be strategic and proficient in making recommendations to the Chief and Council on policy and governance questions, planning, organizing, and determining the day-to-day direction and activities of SLFN, including Member programs and services in accordance with any by-laws and policies made by Chief and Council and by any Federal or Provincial funders.
The Band Manager will focus on band governance, contract administration, staff supervision, and ensuring good financial service delivery for the key responsibility areas:

QUALIFICATIONS:
· Post-secondary Degree in Commerce, Administration, Management, Finance, or Public Administration; or a Diploma in a related field;
· Must have 5 (five) years of senior management experience (preferably First Nation’s experience), with emphasis on financial management, human resource management, administration, and staff supervision;
· Must have 3 (three)+ years’ experience working with and reporting to a board or council;
· Operational knowledge of all SLFN programs and services;
· Understanding of the role, function and challenges of First Nations and the interface between the Band Manager with Council, Members, Treaty 8, Government, and other First Nations;
· Intermediate computer skills, including knowledge of spreadsheets, accounting (SAGE), word processing systems, presentations, and e-mail;
· Excellent written and oral communications skills, including the ability to write reports, proposals, contracts, policies, and motions along with excellent public speaking, and negotiation skills;
· The ability to demonstrate resilience and remain calm, respectful, and self-confident even under conditions of stress;
· Demonstrated business acumen with the ability to read, write, and interpret proposals, contracts, budgets, financial statements, and variance reports;
· Respects all cultural diversity, and understands First Nations culture;
· Must provide a clear RCMP Police Information Check, and a valid class 5 driver’s license, and driver’s abstract.
