What are the certifications related to Security Officer? Are the certifications mandatory for practicising in this field? Do employers show any preference in hiring individuals with these certifications?

    Requirements in Ontario

Security Officers in Ontario are required to hold a valid Security License. The license can be acquired through the ministry of community safety and correctional services. The cost for the license is 80$ and must be renewed yearly. When you obtain this license is it your card that allows you to contract yourself out to company's that provide security services. You must have this card and provide it when requested while deemed "on duty" as per Section 34 of the security act or else you can face large fines.

While it is currently in the testing phases very soon any person applying for a security or private investigator card or both must pass a Ontario training course regardless of previous security experience or even police experience. This is currently in the implementation process.

While this is all you require to work other certificates that are recommended are included below but may vary or more may be added:

-Law and security diploma from a recognized college or a Police Foundations diploma from a recognized college

    - WHMIS certificate (required by most jobs)

    - Standard first aid with CPR and AED (most jobs require a minimum of Emergency first aid)

Certain security jobs may require other licenses as well Ex. A marina site may require a boat operator card, armored car positions may require a PAL license. Factory may require a TDG certificate.

Persons with more certificates and experience will be preferred for hiring.
